Our Journey to Mogo

George Costa and Elena

15 years ago, Mogo (previously known as Arnywear) founder George Costa was upset by his children's experience with mosquitos. In hot counties mosquitos are expected, however what George found was that his children were reacting just as badly to the bites as they were to the anti-mosquito repellent spray used at the time.

Products that contain DEET are not suitable for people with sensitive skin or even those without! It was first developed for the Vietnamese forces in America. Troops found that when they used DEET spray or cream on their face and when they held their guns against it, the varnish from the gun came off onto their skin. This was due to the harsh chemicals within the repellents.

George made it his mission to create a non-harmful and effective method for repelling mosquitos. In his research with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, they understood that common citrus mosquito repellents on the market used a lemon eucalyptus smell. However, it was only a specific property within the lemon eucalyptus the repelled mosquitos. George sought out to micro-encapsulate this property and make it safe for sensitive skin by coating it on a fabric.

Mogo was invited to ITV studios for it to be tested in-front of Phillip Schofield and Loraine Kelly. Nigel Hill from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine demonstrated Mogo's effectiveness by putting his hand in a mesh box full of mosquitos. As Nigel was wearing Mogo on his wrist, the mosquitos travelled to the sides of the box to avoid the smell.

Further to the success of Mogo, George advertised in a Newspaper for nurses. He offered them a Mogo Bear keyring, in exchange for them testing out the product. The nurses quickly found success in Mogo. Therefore, when patients arrived in the practises suffering with sensitive skin conditions and mosquito bites, Mogo was the first thing they recommended.
